Medway, She Wrote

About me

Hello and welcome!

Born and raised in the North East of England, I’m a Geordie by birth and now a proud resident of the Medway town of Gillingham. I moved down South after meeting my husband, a musician and lifelong Gills fan, who is affectionately referred to on this blog as The Man of Kent. I started Medway, She Wrote to tell the world about this place where I live.

Fuelled by copious amounts of Yorkshire tea, I write about the people, history, heritage and everyday life of Medway. I also write about Kent more generally, and occasionally other topics that interest me (frequently books, and sometimes, travel).

What does it mean to be a Geordie in Gillingham? Well, it means that Charles Dickens has become my patron saint, and I’m disappointed every time I see Thomas Waghorn without his customary traffic cone. The Medway grassroots music scene, one of the greatest in the country, has become the soundtrack to my life. I’ve pounded Medway’s streets photographing hidden gems like the Luton murals, embraced the madness of the annual Sweeps festival, and cheered on the Gills from the Rainham End. I have a list of favourite local sights, pubs, restaurants, stories and shops that’s about a mile long, and shelves (actually boxes) stuffed with Medway-related books. My roots are now firmly set in these Medway towns, this patch of the Garden of England. I love this place, and I ain’t afraid to say it.

If you’re reading this blog, first of all, thank you! I hope you’ll find it interesting, and discover something about Medway that you didn’t know before.

Comments and messages are always welcome. I also love a recommendation, so let me know if you think there’s something I should see, do, or write about. You can get in touch by email at medwayshewrote@gmail.com, or on Instagram.

Medway, She Wrote is written by me, a real-life human (no AI slop here!) which means you might occasionally spot a typo or a mistake. I try to be as accurate as possible, so if you think you’ve spotted an error, I won’t mind if you point it out.

And finally, if you like what you read, you can sign up to receive new posts by email using the subscribe button. Signing up is completely free, and I’ll only ever email you when there’s a new post.

Best wishes from Medway,
